Overview

Anki AI Assistant (“the Extension”) is a browser extension that helps users create Anki flashcards using AI. This Privacy Policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and your choices regarding data collection.

Data We Collect

1. Data You Provide

• API Keys: Your AI provider keys (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Pexels, Google Cloud TTS) are stored locally in your browser’s chrome.storage and are never sent to our servers. They are only used to communicate directly with the respective third-party APIs.
• Vocabulary Words: Words you enter or highlight are sent to your configured AI provider (Google Gemini or OpenAI) for card generation. We do not store, log, or have access to your vocabulary data.

2. Anonymous Usage Analytics

We collect anonymous, aggregated usage data via Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to improve the Extension. This includes:

• Feature usage (e.g., which features are used, button clicks)
• Extension version and browser type
• Error events (error types only, no personal content)
• Session duration

We do NOT collect:

• Your vocabulary words, definitions, or card content
• Your API keys or credentials
• Your Anki deck names or card data
• Any personally identifiable information (PII)
• Browsing history or webpage content

3. Local Storage

The Extension stores your settings and preferences locally using Chrome’s chrome.storage API. This data never leaves your device and includes:

• AI provider selection and API keys
• Target language preference
• AnkiConnect URL configuration
• Field mapping preferences

Third-Party Services

The Extension communicates with the following third-party services only when you actively use the corresponding features:

Your Choices

Opt-Out of Analytics

You can disable anonymous usage analytics at any time:

1. Click the Extension icon → Settings
2. Toggle “Send anonymous usage statistics” to OFF

When disabled, no analytics data is collected or transmitted.

Data Deletion

Since all your data is stored locally in your browser:

• Uninstalling the Extension removes all locally stored data
• You can clear Extension data via chrome://extensions/ → Anki AI Assistant → Remove

Data Security

• All API communications use HTTPS encryption
• API keys are stored in Chrome’s secure chrome.storage API
• No data is stored on external servers controlled by us
• AnkiConnect communication occurs over your local network only

Children’s Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
